Persuasive Essay On Roanoke Shooting Case

Improved Essays
The shooting that happened live on the news a few days ago was very tragic. Two journalists that were on live TV, were shot and killed. The man that shot and killed them was Vester Lee Flanagan II. He is forty-one years old and lives in Roanoke. I don’t think he should’ve killed himself afterwards. He deserves to go to jail for what he did. Taking his life was not the right thing to do. The suspect, Flanagan, should’ve been sentenced to life in prison or at least should be kept in prison for many years. A few days before the shooting took place, he faxed a note to ABC News. The note he faxed said, “I’ve been a human powder keg for a while…just waiting to go BOOM.” It was wrong what he did. He should not have done what he did. He should be punished. Maybe instead of him killing two people and wounding one, he should have got help. Vester Flanagan later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. He had claimed, the staff had mistreated him during his time there. He should have talked to someone if he was hurting and knew he was a ‘human powder keg waiting to go boom.’ There are therapists that help people. They are here for reason, to help, and to talk to you about your problems. He needed someone to vent to. Sometimes venting can help someone feel better because you …show more content…
Those two journalists’ names were, Alison Parker, and Adam Ward. Alison Parker was twenty-four years old and Adam Ward was twenty-seven years old. Alison Parker suffered gunshot wounds to the head and chest while Adam Ward died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso. Parker and Ward both worked for WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia, and were shot while broadcasting by a former employee of their situation. Flanagan also wounded one woman who was being interviewed at the time of the incident. Her name is Vicki Gardner, she was rushed to the hospital where she had surgery. She was released from the hospital three days ago (September

However terrible to say, it is no wonder why people have become accustomed to hearing tragedies of such caliber on the news. Of course, that doesn’t make it any less upsetting or case for finding closure faster than in other situations. What it does justify is the use of background checks; not being allowed to “purchase firearms without first presenting the proper government papers” (Etzioni), as mentioned earlier, and extra security measures, even if taken on “law-abiding citizens” (Garfinkel) which should not be received so sensitively because of their purpose of “[enhancing] the common good” (Etzioni). The United States we know today reported Columbine to have been “the first mass shooting in nearly eight years that killed 10 or more people”, which is clearly different than the United States of the past where “after 1999, seven years would pass without one. Today, such gaps are unthinkable.…

Americans love guns and Americans hate guns. There is a perplexing relationship within the American people and their desire for guns. American citizens are aware of the danger that follows with gun use, but still advocate to keep them legal within the states. The gruesome massacres that have occurred within American schools such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, as well as the massacre that recently occurred in Orlando, Florida at club Pulse, somehow do not resonate with the fact that this country has a very serious gun problem. The United States must figure out logical ways to make access to guns harder such as disallowing someone who has been on a FBI watch list from ever purchasing weapons.…

Mass Shootings The anti-gun crowd would like us to believe that with more guns, comes more gun violence, but since more and more states have allowed people to carry a side arm, crime has declined. Can these things be a mere coincidence? Perhaps, but even if that’s true, it still proves that allowing law abiding citizens to be armed does not increase crime, and suggest that it contributes to lowering it instead (Federal Bureau of Investigation, n.d.). Something else to ponder is where do mass shootings occur?…

That day they took the lives of 13 students and wounded 23 more students. This is just a small fraction of all the mass shootings going on in America. On April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia another 23 year old gunman killed 32 people and wounded an undetermined number of individuals. Again, on December 14, 2012 another shooter named Adam Lanza took innocent lives. The ones killed were twenty children and six adults who courageously put their lives before the innocent children at the Sandy Hook elementary school (Atkin).…
