Much of Rios sewage and trash produced by its 12 million inhabitants flow freely into its untreated waters. Athletes will be sailing upon, rowing through, and swimming in these waters. This is definitely a major concern. A member from the Dutch sailing team who have been practising at the Olympic venue of Guanabara bay said “We just have to keep our mouths closed when the water sprays up” and Dr Daniel Becker a local paediatrician has said “Foreign athletes will literally be swimming through human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms”. Another example of the atrocities Olympians may have to face can be seen when human body parts washed up on the 29th of June at an Olympic volleyball venue. This asserts that this is what we could be seeing when the Olympics start. This is not acceptable.
