“The threat for Zika is just too great” “2016 Olympians will be competing in poop water”. These are currently the fears that are looming over Rio for the upcoming Olympics. These problems should cause great concern and need to be acted upon. Rio Olympics should not go ahead until all countries can be certain that their athletes will be safe from disease and untreated waters and also have reliable security. Rio was chosen to hold the 2016 Summer Olympics in 2009 by the International Olympic Committee. Because of this they have planned and budgeted for the problems they would face. But have they achieved their goals? Is it safe for the Rio Olympics to go ahead?

Much of Rios sewage and trash produced by its 12 million inhabitants flow freely into its untreated waters. Athletes will be sailing upon, rowing through, and swimming in these waters. This is definitely a major concern. A member from the Dutch sailing team who have been practising at the Olympic venue of Guanabara bay said “We just have to keep our mouths closed when the water sprays up” and Dr Daniel Becker a local paediatrician has said “Foreign athletes will literally be swimming through human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms”. Another example of the atrocities Olympians may have to face can be seen when human body parts washed up on the 29th of June at an Olympic volleyball venue. This asserts that this is what we could be seeing when the Olympics start. This is not acceptable.
