Desperate individuals, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters are fleeing their homes, leaving family and their most valuable possessions behind to board on dangerous and unsafe vessels headed for Australia. In doing this, it has created an uproar of panic and fear, and a massive social issue and debate in Australia about people seeking asylum. Has Australia forgotten that in 1951 they signed and agreed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Refugee Convention?
The outcome for signing and approving to this convention means Australia has guidelines and responsibilities to follow and adhere to, including, protecting the human rights of all asylum seekers, refugees and migrants who arrive in Australia, irrespective of how they arrived and if they arrived with or without appropriate documentation (Commission 2015). Panic is created and twisted through the media for the public with fabricated and misleading stories. The information, if you will, creates a bias and negative connotations. It is not suggesting that the media business isn’t valuable, it is one of the world’s most influential outlets for providing and releasing information on a enormous scale and has been used to reach large audiences, public and communities, but more so the point, how can media be accurate, fair, responsible and effective of refugee, migrant and asylum seeker issues in Australia when only half of the story is told with false and misleading misinformation is being told to an uneducated and racist country.
