Racism is one of the most controversial problems in history. Imagine walking through a security line and getting pulled aside to be checked separately because you’re Muslim. Imagine getting shot just because you pulled out your I.D. People of color face problems every single day just because their skin is darker. Maybe you understand. Maybe you don’t. I’m about to tell you one of the greatest lessons you’ll ever learn. You are, who you are. Your skin doesn’t define you. You define you.
Racism is the ideology that humans are divided into separate entities called “races”. In 1933, Hitler came to power in Germany and made it his mission to persecute and wipe-out the entire Jewish race. In 1619, a Dutch ship brought 20 slaves to Jamestown Virginia. This started racism in America when we started slavery. Those who practice racism believe that the lower status races deserve lower status jobs and that members of the “superior” race should get more pay and higher ranking jobs. This, however, makes absolutely no sense, because some people of the so-called “superior” race have no business being in high ranking jobs. Wrong. Racism still exists today. Hate crimes are still going on and people are still getting denied because of the color of their skin. If African Americans can get shot for shoplifting, and white people can get restrained using special training for shooting up a school, that's a problem. People could argue all day, whether racism still exists or not, but in fact, it does. It happens every day! African Americans and Latino Americans are put in stereotypes every single day. Racial slurs, violence, and labels affect these people all the time. This occurs with Muslims as well. Society says “They’re terrorists.” and they say racist things. It’s hurtful.
