We need to get the kids out of the school buildings, give them a chance to learn about the world first hand." (75) John Holt articulates the idea that administrators should not limit where kids learn in school. In Elementary school teachers ask their students the question "What do you want to be when you grow up"; while this seems like an easy question to answer it is actually very difficult. One of the biggest choices that an individual makes as student is picking their career. This one choice will dictate what they will do for the rest of their lives. The best way to do that is to let students experience the world is by field trips, and options of that nature. By doing this it broadens their horizons and gives them a major amount of careers to choose from. If a child wants to be an astronaut instructors should tell that they can be anything if they mind to it. A child 's first instinct is "I can do everything" until a teacher squashes that students dream like a grape; what that teacher should be doing is supporting that kids dream because any dream can become a reality if an kid has enough people in their corner. But if we are educating students to pass sometimes intricate test and they are not getting any knowledge out of class then what is the purpose? John Holt states his opinion by saying "Let 's get rid of all these nonsense of grades, exams and marks." (76) Kids are learning to pass an exam but their not memorize their multiplication tables, their learning that having the right answer has more repercussions than having the wrong answer. They learn to respect authority no matter what they say or what their views are. Today 's teachers have more of a lets all do it my way because it is better than the students way. The only time an individual can think for themselves is when a student is outside of school bank robbing them of that talent. What schools should do is celebrate being different, give ideas collaboratively because if there are one million different ways to a problem a student will still get the right answer. Every mind is different so instead of treating a school of 1,000 students as if they all had the same mind; pair the students who are alike in whatever way that maybe and make sure they all get to the same end result which is currently passing such big exams.
