I. Explanation of the issue: Physician- Assisted Suicide
A. Physician- Assisted suicide or active euthanasia “occurs when a physician facilitates a patient’s death by providing the necessary means and/or information to enable the patient to perform the life-ending act (eg, the physician provides sleeping pills and information about the lethal dose, while aware that the patient may commit suicide)” (ama-assn.org). ”. Physician- Assisted Suicide is usually practiced when a patient is terminally ill and in pain. The idea of playing God and taking a life away had been a controversial topic since “before the birth of Jesus Christ”. (content.time.com). The religious aspect of this practice is linked to “the idea that it should be illegal to help someone commit suicide is most often ascribed to the Biblical Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Kill”.

The religious people in my life think that suicide whether it is direct or indirect, is cowardly and selfish. I do not believe that at all. I think that people who decide that suicide is there only option, are looking out for the well-being of not only themselves but for the loved ones in their life. Being diagnosed with a terminal illness is painful for both the patient and their families. I understand that it is hard to watch the one you love be in constant pain and feeling like you cannot do anything. A person who is terminally ill would not want their families to watch deteriorate and would want them to remember them still in good health. However, I think that there could be a different way to approach the situation. Having organizations like “dying with Dignity” that cater to physician assisted suicide is just wrong because I feel that knowing when and how you are going to die is

Even if those options go against peoples ' own morals. The main purpose, from a nursing perspective, is to help heal and advocate for patients. If a patient has a condition which can never be "healed," why wouldn 't we as nurses want to advocate for our patients to receive the next best of care of physician-assisted suicide? I hope to see in the near future more states opening up to the idea of physician-assisted suicide. If this practice can be justified by at least two principles of nursing ethics, it doesn 't make sense that it is not readily available "treatment" for people to chose that have a terminal disease.…

Physician-Assisted Suicide which is also known as PAS has been a topic that has been highly debated for years, it gives patients in critical medical conditions the right to end their lives. Many people think that PAS and euthanasia are the same, while both actions include medications in lethal doses, Physician Assisted Suicide is when a doctor makes a patient’s death less difficult by providing him or her with a lethal dose of medication such as barbiturates or a combination of medications to allow the life ending act or to refrain the patient from receiving treatments that are used to prolong a terminally ill patients life. The physician lends the knowledge but the person does the act. While, euthanasia is when someone actually administers the medication to the patient to fulfill…

The Hemlock Society was founded by Derek Humphry in 1980, Mr. Humphry had chosen hemlock as symbolic of voluntary suicide. Mr. Humphry had written a book about helping his wife Jean die which was titled “Jeans Way” It was through his first wife’s experience that Mr. Humphry decided to found a society that would advocate for euthanasia for terminally ill patients. According to information from the Secretary of State of California website the Hemlock Society is not listed as a financial supporter, although both The Americans Against Human Suffering INC and Californians Against Human Suffering are listed on the website. The main focus of these groups and the reason they believed in and supported proposition 161 was their belief in giving compassion and the choice of “Death with Dignity” to people who were suffering from untreatable terminal illnesses. There was not any financial information listed on the website, the farthest back the dates go was 1999 and does not give any information for 1992.…

    I. Physician-assisted suicide, under various names and colloquial definitions, has been a documented ethical issue for centuries – not to mention an undocumented ethical issue since the hypothetical dawn of life. By common understanding, physician-assisted suicide is death either directly or indirectly permitted or carried out by a physician. In simple terms, an “out” is provided. For this reason, it is often associated with chronic pain or terminal illness. Suicide where the doctor in charge is directly involved is perhaps the first situation which comes to mind when one thinks of euthanasia.…

Human being must survive until their last breath and we all have no control over his or her life, and even we have no control over own life. The notion of assist patient to commit suicide is totally absurd and a great type of sin and cruel as well. If someone says that the greatest and unbearable amount of pain is the main factor for patient to commit suicide than it is totally wrong. As Kathleen raises this point, I am against her illogical point in this regard. According to mu understanding, people who made this reason that pain is the main factor that influence both the patient and doctor to assist suicide is not right and illegal by any means.…

Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) is the voluntary termination of a person’s life with the assistance of a physician in a controlled environment allows a quick, painless, and dignified death for those suffering from terminal illnesses. The arguments against physician-assisted suicide are ineffective because it gives terminally ill patients the right a dignified death. Today, five states have legalized physician-assisted suicide, sparing families in those states from watching their loved ones go through unbearable suffering and pain. The question of assisted suicide, and later physician-assisted suicide, has been long debated.…

It also deprives the family and friends of someone whose life they’ve shared. This reality causes tremendous pain for those left behind and gives rise to many complex emotions and questions” (Harvey, 2016, p. 2). While suicide creates pain for loved ones left behind it is entirely selfish to ask someone who is suffering a painful death that could last six months to stay alive because a loved one is not ready to let go. The patient who is dying is suffering the pain and for a loved one to want them to stay around is incredibly selfish because they are not experiencing that pain. It’s best to understand what the terminally ill person is going through and respect and support that person’s wishes.…

When the word suicide is used, most people think of the gruesome gun to the head or overdose on medication. Everyone is quick to assume an act of suicide is somebody doing harm to his or herself. Not many people think of suicide as being something that a physician would help assist with, but it has definitely become a controversy over the years. Physician-assisted suicide is when a physician receives consent from a terminally ill patient to administer drugs that will eventually kill them. Before this may happen, there are a number of events that have to happen first.…

Physician-Assisted Suicide There is one thing that you can be certain of your entire life; you are going to die. We had no choice to be born, so should we have no choice when we die? Oftentimes we do not even know when we are going to die, in instances such as car accidents or murders. Sometimes we do know, and the death process can be long and drawn out, with pain, suffering, and mountains of medical bills.…

Many people, will argue the morals behind physician assisted suicide until they die. According to Lesser (2009), it is not illegal to commit suicide, therefore it should not be illegal to help someone commit suicide (1). Along the same lines, if a society approves of assisting suicide for those who are experiencing grave suffering or terminally ill, it should be legal to help them end their lives (Lesser, 2009, p.1). And while it is not a crime to commit suicide and does not harm anyone, the law legalizing assisted suicide would act in citizen’s best interests (Lesser, 2009, p. 2). If someone knowingly and willingly wants to end their lives, but needs the help and courage to actually do it, why should anyone stop them?…

For everyone immediately involved with the terminally ill patient, it seems the most happiness would come from helping them and doing whatever is needed to make sure they are no longer suffering. The family and friends would know they are no longer suffering, same with the nurses and doctors. They would also know this is what they wanted, they either wanted it because they wanted to die with dignity, they wanted to go on their own terms, not the diseases, or they could not deal with the pain and or not being able to care for themselves at all. But an argument for the wrongness is that the doctors and nurses fight to keep their patients alive, not to assist them in suicide and although we could all understand this there is more to look at when talking about them. Doctors and nurses main goal might be to save lives, but it is also to make sure that their patient is comfortable and living out the rest of their life no matter how short or long the best way they can.…

Physician assisted suicide (PAS) is a highly controversial topic in several countries, especially the United States. Physician assisted suicide is known by many names such as physician assisted death (PAD), death with dignity (DWD), and aid in dying (AID). This practice occurs when a doctor or other medical professionals, such as nurses, help a terminally ill or disabled patient take their own life. This can be by giving physical means to commit suicide (i.e., prescription drugs) or instructions on how to commit suicide. It is most frequently used when a patient is diagnosed with a terminal illness, having less than six months to live.…

One of the many ethical dilemmas surrounding health care today is physician assisted suicide. Many will misinterpret this as Euthanasia because they both accomplish the same goal, causing the death of a person. However, physician assisted suicide is different because of the way that death is accomplished. Boudreau and Somerville (2014) explain that, “In assisted suicide, the person takes the death-inducing product; in euthanasia, another individual administers it” (p. 2). The physician in the case of physician assisted suicide is removed from the actual act of death.…

Against Assisted Suicide In many countries around the world, it is legal for doctors to prescribe a medicine that can potentially end a patient’s life if the patient wishes to commit suicide. In the United States, four states -Vermont, Oregon, Washington, and Montana- are the only states which have chosen to legalize assisted suicide (Backmann par. 6). Physician assisted suicide, also called assisted suicide, has become an extremely sensitive topic that has been debated by everyone, from academic scholars to everyday people, and has become almost as controversial as abortion.…
