April 12th , 2016 It can be difficult to consider what's going to happen to your body after you pass, not to mention donating your organs and tissue. Nonetheless, being an organ donor is a bighearted and beneficial choice that can be a lifesaver. From transplanting to saving lives to research purposes in order to find cures are just some ways organ and body donation can benefit society. About 120,000 Americans are currently waiting for an organ transplant (Paulson). Those 120,000 Americans need organs in order to live. However, the reality is that doctors focus on saving the patient's life when they are treating them. In fact, when someone goes to the hospital for treatment, they'll be seen by a doctor whose specialty best matches their emergency (Mayo Clinic Staff). In any given situation, doctors will only care about saving the patient and the patient's life; not their organs. Doctors will always try to the best of their ability to save their patients no matter what. Another worry a person might have is that doctors might sign their death certificate without them really being dead. Having said that, organ donation is only considered after being declared brain dead which is decided after the donor is given additional test to determine if they are truly completely dead (Mayo Clinic Staff). Doctors and transplant teams will take more than enough time to make sure the patient is dead without any doubts. Patients may also worry about the cost of surgeries and test. Many believe that the cost would be charged to their families, but according to Mayo Clinic, the cost of any additional test would be free and the transplantation surgery would be paid for by the recipient (Mayo Clinic Staff). This would leave the donor and donor's family stress free about any additional
