Persuasive Essay On Opioids

The first solution that will lower the amounts of deaths from opioids is with the legalization of marijuana. Medical marijuana can be used instead of some opioids that people use to decrease the amount of pain they are in. Marijuana will help by how people will not have to be prescribed many different medications. Marijuana is legal in eight states, and it is legal for medical use in 21 states (Corasaniti). There are two studies that were done by the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, and the studies compared states that had marijuana legal and other states that do not (Ritter). The study shows that states with the option of medical marijuana instead of a persiciped medication saw a drop of six percent in the amount of opioid prescriptions (Ritter). People are choosing an alternative to opioids so they do not have to worry about the risks with opioids. Richard Friedman, who is with New York Times, stated in his article: “We know that 40 percent of all opiate overdose deaths involve a prescription opiate. Some may say that the programs may not reach all students. That my be true, but Korn and Kamp mention how there are some students in college who are dying from opioids, so showing students that their peers are dying may leave a big impact on the students life. The student has the choice to be able to see the severity of opioids through these programs, and be exposed to this topic now instead of find out the bad way on how opioids can end one's life. Also other may question about who would present these programs to the class. Whalen talked about how there will be pharmacist who can come to the school and present the programs, and that will have a big impact on the students because pharmacist are credible people who are award of the opioid
