Prior to 1979, when the high school included Grades 10 through 12, open campus applied to all students. But in 1980, when Grade 9 was added to the high school, administrators decided that younger students needed more restrictions and closed the campus for Grades 9 and 10, leaving an open campus only for 11th- and 12th-graders.
Before their children are in high school, parents often wonder whether open campus is a good idea, said Ms. Telsey. But the students are used to the freedom and the policy is generally accepted within the community, she said.
But at North Shore High School, the open campus controversy is brewing as the deadline for a final decision draws closer.
Parents who want school to be their children's baby sitter are not realistic, said Nadya Karyo, a senior. If parents want their children in school, they should insure that they have a full schedule without free periods, she said.
