There are a lot of issues in today 's school system but one of the main issues in students attending kindergarten to twelfth grade is obesity. Obesity has consumed the lives of many adolescents and become a huge issue when looking at the effect of how a student learns and how the take in information. Being that obesity has increased, the amount of health disorders has as well. Obesity is one of the leading causes for all health disorders, such as, diabetes, heart disease , and cancer. It also has a major effect on causing mental disorders, such as depression. Obesity is a disease that is caused from being over weight with too much excess body fat. This could be caused by genetics, lack of exercise, or unhealthy eating. Obesity has become a huge problem in children and adolescents in the past couple decades. Approximately 14 percent of children and 12 percent of adolescents are overweight today in the United States. These percentages are estimated from the body mass index cutoff points. the amount of overweight individuals has increased dramatically over time. Looking at ways to prevent obesity as years go on the government has made many changes to the daily lifestyle of students at school. It is proven that it is more difficult to lose weight once one 's body has matured so it should be a goal to target individuals at a young age, perhaps students. 95 percent of american youth attended school between the ages of 5 and 17 years ("Prevalence of Obesity Among Children and Adolescents: United States, Trends 1963-1965 Through 2007-2008") Being that people spend the majority of their time the first two decades of their life in school, schools and teachers are one of the factors in life that influences and teaches students good habits and prepares them. What people eat has a direct effect on how they act, which also affects how a student learns and thinks. Eating healthier creates better learning and gives students brains the ability to work to the best of their ability. According to the society for Neuroscience the intake of foods with high amounts of saturated fat can actually harm learning ability and memory, but these are the foods most accessible to students in school. Schools have made effort to reduce the amounts of unhealthy foods served in their cafeterias. Certain foods like these can actually reduce a student 's ability to learn. Some foods can take energy away from an individual 's body. An important substance the human body needs to intake is glucose (sugars). Glucose comes from carbohydrates, there are good and bad carbs, the bad ones, such as, refined grains and sweets can be harmful to the body and reduce one 's ability to learn. But for every wrong there is always a right, in order to function properly the body needs to consume carbs, the good ones. A human body needs to take in a certain amount of carbs to be able to function the right way. Good carbs include Whole grain products such as wheat bread, beans, oats, and whole grain pastas, other foods include fruits and vegetables.
