Persuasive Research Essay The controversial topic of internet censorship has been disputed multiple times within the last few years. Internet censorship like most debatable topics, has two sides with representatives arguing for it and against it. The most recent issue debated beginning in 2014 and ending in 2015, was over Net Neutrality. Net Neutrality also referred to as “Open Internet” by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established certain rules as the basis of its operations such as no blocking which prevents broadband providers from blocking legal content to its users. Net Neutrality establishes the basis for what is known as open internet. For daily internet users such as schools, offices, and consumers, Net Neutrality is the beneficial concept of freedom of speech and freedom of expression. As can be seen Net Neutrality is intrinsically a good thing. One advocate that sees Net Neutrality as a form of censorship is none other than the internet giant, Verizon. Verizon claims that the rules imposed by the FCC with Net Neutrality alter the views seen in the first amendment, being freedom of speech and property rights under the Fifth Amendment. Big Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) are not in favor of net neutrality because they see it as detrimental to their businesses. Both bills are essentially the same thing with different names as explained by reputationhawk.com SOPA and PIPA are, “The bill was designed to cut off Internet access to websites which traffic in copyrighted material. The bill authorizes courts to ban advertising networks from working with certain websites and to prevent companies like PayPal and Alert Pay from being able to accept money from, or send money to, infringing sites. Furthermore, courts would be able to prevent search engines from linking to those sites and Internet service providers could be ordered to cut off access to those websites.” These two bills, if they had been passed back in 2011, would have been the downfall of the internet. These bills give the government unlimited power when it comes to the internet, they would allow the government to shut down any website without any given cause. This affects the daily internet user because the search engine that is used by every internet user would not be here today. That search engine of course is, Google. These bills would affect every search engine due to the fact that they hold or promote these links without intention. Google provides the user with exactly what they searched for, they are not responsible for the websites that the search provides. It also affects blogger or users who decide to post up
