Minimum Wage There is a continuous debate about whether minimum wage is too low or if it should remain the same. There are tremendous amounts of publications of books and articles about minimum wage that helped with the research. The goal of this paper is not to settle the debate whether it is too low or fine where it is, but to enlighten the reader and possibly share quality information about my topic. Minimum wage is too low; in order for people to live without poverty, they should be paid at a higher rate. The lowest wage that employers can legally pay workers is minimum wage (The University California Poverty). Minimum wage originated in New Zealand during the 1890’s, but eventually spread to the United Kingdom in 1909(Neumark 1-8). In 75 years, minimum wage has only been changed 22 times! This is an issue! It is not 1938 anymore, the cost of living has increased. Not to mention inflation rates are rising every year. Minimum wage reached its peak in 1968(Babones). In today’s money it would be equivalent to $10.55 per hour(Babones). Many studies have been done about minimum wage and it’s effect on the unemployment rate, but as a recent study shows, minimum wage does not affect the unemployment rate(Babones). Based on the national income growth, minimum wage should be $22.08 an hour (Babones). Why can’t minimum wage be $10.55? The unemployment rate is higher now, than when minimum wage was $10.55. The act that created minimum wage in the United States is called The Fair Labors Standards Act of 1938(The University California Poverty). This act gave the workers in the United States federal protection(The University California Poverty). This act did more than just enforce a national minimum wage, it also provided the law of workers getting overtime pay, and set restrictions on child workers(The
