It wasn’t until the states made it illegal that the church stepped in. Now of course it was still frowned upon since they believed life was a precious gift, considering it’s been immoral since the 1st century. The Catholic Church has always opposed abortion and the procedure that takes place. In the fifth century St. Augustine “vigorously condemned the practice of induced abortion” as a crime. The Church, however, also believes it should be illegal. Many people throughout the Church pick a side whether it 's pro life or pro choice. Abortion is and was viewed as a sin, but not murder. The Church considers any type of destruction to an embryo abortion, which includes embryonic stem cell research. The Church strongly believes that a human being must have the rights of a person starting from the first of their existence, the moment of conception. It also believes it is society’s right to protect the unborn baby. The two binary sides of this particular subject are, pro-life and pro-choice. A poll ran in 2008 throughout the U.S. found that fifty nine percent of the Catholics considered themselves pro-life, while the other thirty six percent chose pro-choice. A year later in 2009, twenty four percent of the practicing Catholics believed that abortion was morally acceptable.
