Adoptive parents should be given maternity leave for many reasons concerning expenses, lifestyle changes, and getting used to the new being of a child in the house. Under the Federal Family and Medicare Leave Act, passed in 1993, adoptive parents are given unpaid leave for 3 months whilst the average family is given 4 weeks of paid leave then another 8 weeks non-paid leave. If parents are not given the proper time and care to change their lifestyle it will create worse opportunities for the child to be supported, therefore making families across the nation to be broken apart or leaving the child distressed without a home, future, or guidance.
The maternity time adoptive parents receive should get as much attention as birth parents get for both time and money. The amount of paid time should be equal if not more than birth parents get for 8 weeks. If parents are not give the proper time to take care of their new child along with proper pay then the family will not be successful with their choices. In America only unpaid leave is available for option, and if a family is committed to taking proper care of a child they will ensure the family has every financial need necessary, but if unpaid leave is the only option there is no way the family can achieve this goal.
