Some would say yes to marijuana, and others would say absolutely no. When thinking of marijuana; also known as cannabis, a picture of Bob Marley always is the first thing that comes to mind. But with marijuana, it is not all about rolling a joint and smoking it. Years ago, marijuana was once thought to be “a killer, a gateway drug, and an assassin of youth” (Sides). Marijuana users were classified as criminals. Once one has taken the time to understand marijuana and its effects on an individual, one would know marijuana is not a drug America should fear. Marijuana has a lot of benefits, especially for children who have epilepsy. This may come as a shock, but marijuana has been around since at least 3000 B.C. Back then, the Chinese used marijuana for various medical issues as their sole medicine (Sides). Since then things have drastically changed. In America, marijuana was not as accepting as it was in China. When marijuana was brought to the U.S., the government acted fast per Sides “In 1970 the United States Federal Government classified marijuana as a Schedule one drug.” A schedule one drug, according to Sides is any substance that is dangerous, has no valid medical purpose, and one that has a high potential for abuse. Another Schedule one drug, classified by this United States is heroin. When thinking of heroin and marijuana being in the same drug class, of course you wouldn’t want it to be legal for use medically. Since marijuana is classified as a Schedule one drug, marijuana can’t be studied or tested correctly per federal regulations. Marijuana can actually save lives, and should not be in the same category as heroin. Some would argue marijuana’s effects on an individual can be life-threatening. Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC; which is one of many extracts from marijuana can cause uncontrollable laughter, increased appetite, daydreaming, pain relief, and slight amnesia from seconds ago (Sides). Since it has so many negative stereotypes associated with it, no one wants to take the time and explore the many great things this drug can do. Many families have already moved to states that have legalized marijuana in hopes to relieve their epileptic child’s pain and suffering. The mere thought that marijuana users are still categorized as criminals or are of minority descent, is proven incorrect. Marijuana can stimulate the natural brain sensors in children with epilepsy to calm and diminish seizures overall. Hopefully one day soon, America will join other countries who have already legalized marijuana for medical purposes. Marijuana extracts are shown effective in children and should be implemented so that the world’s future leaders can live long enough to make their parents
