Major depression is a mental health condition. It is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interferes with daily life for weeks or longer. People with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Often, anxiety disorders involve repeated episodes of sudden feelings of intense anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks). It’s the worst-case scenario and the one that people would like to not think about. The biggest problem that school screenings can solve is suicides. Not everyone can handle living with Anxiety, depression, and other Mental Illnesses, and in order to escape a life of being hounded by their demons they take their own lives. In the United States, suicide is the third-leading cause of death among persons 15 to 19 years of age. In 2005 alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16.9% of U.S. high school students seriously considered suicide, and 8.4% had attempted suicide at least once during the preceding year (Kennedy). And as previously stated within Canada, suicide accounts for 24 percent of all deaths of 15- to 24-years-olds in Canada--one of the highest youth suicide rates. It is the second leading cause of death, after car accidents, for Canadians between the ages of 10 and 24. According to the Center for Disease Control and the National Institute of Mental Health, over half a million teens commit suicide every year. That’s around 8 million teenagers committing suicide from 2000 to date. That’s an incredulous amount and is a serious concern that should be dealt with immediately.
