High Time The legalization of marijuana has been a highly conversational proposition in the news recently. The government has been struggling to make a decision on whether or not it should be allowed. There are many factors that can determine if marijuana should be legalized- both favorable and unfavorable. There are insufficient negative effects of consuming marijuana, therefore, marijuana should undergo legalization because it is not a lethal drug, the use of marijuana has many positive attributes to the body, and it brings money to the government by taxing it.
Although the use of marijuana is illegal in the majority of states in the United States, countless people currently consume marijuana. They consider alcohol to be a less dangerous drug. “The general public often regards marijuana as a benign substance, but clear risks are associated with its use”(Vargo 40). The government could create certain laws that help control the nation with the use of marijuana. “In the United States marijuana is currently decriminalized in eighteen states, medical marijuana is legalized in twenty-three states and recreational marijuana is legalized in the states of Alaska, Oregon, the District of Columbia, Colorado and Washington.” (Bushan 191). The decriminalization of marijuana in eighteen states is a great case where the use of marijuana is legal with many circumstances. In other words, if one is caught with possession with marijuana they would not necessarily go to jail, but they would be fined for having marijuana.
