Despite many studies and scientific proof, marijuana is still listen as an illegal drug under federal law. In class, Professor Shatkin mentions that both heroin and marijuana use is on a rise. I believe that marijuana usage is on a rise partly because of legalization in some states from recreational and medical use. Heroin is now on arise because of addiction to painkillers. Around the late 1990’s, there were loosened restriction on the amount of pain killers a doctor could prescribe. Before, the idea behind this was to prevent patients from suffering pain. This has led to an over prescription of painkillers leading to addiction. There are now harder restrictions to the access of painkillers such as databases allowing doctors and pharmaceuticals companies can use to see the amount of prescriptions of pain medication a person has. This has led to people going on alternative which is heroin. It has been noted that increase usage or dependence of the drug has led to heroin overdose deaths.
