Persuasive Essay On Legalizing Marijuana

While some states such as Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska have legalized Marijuana, there is still much debate as to whether or not it should be legalized in other states. Some people argue that marijuana has healing affects. It can help with cancer, nausea (a side-effect of chemotherapy), and sleep. These people who want marijuana to be legalized claim that marijuana is less addictive than other drugs. They also say if others accept cigarettes and alcohol as being legal, why should marijuana not be legal. Although the people protesting for the legalization of marijuana make many good points, there are many adverse effects to this drug as well. If marijuana is legalized in all fifty states, then the use of marijuana would increase, and the amount of drug-impaired driving would increase too (“Why we should not legalize marijuana,” April 20, 2010). Marijuana may be legal in some states, but there are side effects, which come with this legalization. Marijuana should not be legalized in the United States since it leads to more addicts, more drug-impaired driving, and is one of the leading causes of substance abuse.
