Marijuana was legalized first in washington in 2012. Since the legalization of marijuana in seven other states: Oregon, California, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado, Maine, and Massachusetts crime has increased. The amount of smuggling has increased in the United States. Legalization was meant to decrease usage of the black-market, but due to the legalization in only some states, smugglers have taken advantage of the laws(2017). According to some officers they have seen an increase in cartel activity on the U.S. side of the border(2017). The teen consumption causes complications in brain development. The attention span and memory for teens is also decreased(2017). Teens who use marijuana are more known to have more of a criminal behavior and decreased IQ(2017). Teens are also affected by the short term side effects.
