Even when there is not war, there is a constant battle happening within the United States. Due to different opinions of states and federal law, conflicts about specific subjects, such as the legalization or marijuana, have been debated for years. The plant used to grow what we know as marijuana today, was not used for medicinal reasons or recreational uses in the beginning. The production of the hemp plant was started when the only colony in the US at the time was ordered to grow hemp plants for the specific use of exporting fibers. Even George Washington grew hemp plants on Mount Vernon. It wasn’t until the 1850’s that help plants started to be utilized for medicinal purposes. Due to marijuana being classified as a narcotic (a drug or other substance affecting mood or behavior and sold for nonmedical purposes, especially an illegal one), everything that was sold with cannabis inside of it or something that was mislabeled …show more content…
In short, this act made it illegal to possess and transfer marijuana as long as it was not for medical or industrial use. It was issues under federal law that without medical or industrial use, it was illegal to have or sell marijuana within the United States. This act was then deemed unconstitutional by the 91st congress in 1970. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 was put into place so that drugs could be better evaluated and studied so that drug abuse would decrease and strengthen law enforcement in the field of drug abuse. A newer issue that has sprouted due to this controversial situation is a battle between the State of Oregon and the DEA. Since July of 2015, at the state level, Oregon has legalized wee, but at the Federal level marijuana is still considered an illegal drug. Due to this, the DEA is still doing raids on legal organizations and shops. In 2014 the DEA spent $960,000 in Oregon alone in order to remove 16,067 marijuana
