According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “ 13% of pregnancy-related deaths worldwide are related to complications of unsafe abortion,” which is only one of the reasons why we need access to legal abortion. The right to have an abortion is a huge debate. Are you pro-choice, do you think women should have access to abortions and should be able to make that decision for themselves? Or are you pro-life and think abortion should be illegal? These women have to break the law to get medical care that they need (Sarah, Pro-Choice action network.) Not only are women putting themselves in danger by getting illegal abortions, but medical workers are risking their careers when they perform the illegal procedure (Gale Opposing Viewpoints.) When women are allowed abortions the amount of deaths by illegal abortion drop significantly, “In 1972, there were 39 maternal deaths from illegal abortions. By 1976, after Roe v. Wade had legalized abortion nationwide, this number dropped to two,” (ProCon.org,) although the fetuses are not getting a chance at living past that point we are not losing the women who are mothers and contributing members of society. The Merriam-Webster dictionary says that rape is “... sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against a person's will…” A women that has been raped did not consent to sexual intercourse therefore she did not willingly put herself at risk to become pregnant and should be able to terminate the pregnancy if that is what she feels is
