“Everybody Calm Down About Breastfeeding”, “The Case Against Breast- Feeding” and “Overselling Breast- Feeding” are three article titles from the initial page of links that pop up on a Google search for the term breastfeeding. The question of whether or not to choose this option of infant nurture arouses strong sentiment. Why should such an essential and harmless exercise cause such reaction? As a mother of three sons who has journeyed down this road I have a few thoughts on the subject. Any woman who has done so for any length of time can tell you. It can start from the very beginning, such as having an infant who struggles to latch on to the nipple, or down the road when a woman might develop mastitis, a painful infection in her mammary glands. Yet there are times when in avoiding a difficulty we also miss out on something important and perhaps indispensable. Most mothers will bond with their babies whether they choose to breast or bottle feed, but the connection a breastfeeding mother has with her infant can never be manufactured alternatively. If a woman is going to be successful and develop an adequate milk supply negative emotions will certainly be an impediment. Educational initiatives are just that – educational! If today’s women are uninformed, then how will they learn about all the marvelous benefits the child they love will receive if they chose to nurse them. We would certainly not learn it from the generation who were cheated from the experience.
