Beginning in 1997, Congress and the president have decided to give various groups of illegal immigrants the right to citizenship in the United States. There is debate in congress over whether or not to attempt to enforce immigration laws. The media plays a significant role in the debate of illegal immigration. Typically the media has framed immigration as crime, illegality, and crisis. This reputation of immigration has pushed the public to want stricter laws on immigration. The consequence of framing immigration is that more people take this view as their own. Illegal immigrants are important to our economy, especially to the agriculture industry. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately half of all the employed workers in agriculture are unauthorized. Without these workers the work force in the U.S. would decrease too low which could severely hurt the economy because we would not have enough workers. Additionally, if the government were to deport all of the illegal aliens, prices of crops could increase past the price consumers are willing to pay, which would be catastrophic to the economy.
