When children are born, unfortunately, they do not come with directions for how to be a good parent. Therefore, many parents are faced with trying to define the term while raising the child. Because so many parents constantly struggle with the same issues of parenting, classes have been formed to teach you how to deliver your baby, breast feed your baby, even how to wash your baby. But when it comes to raising a baby, we are all up to the mercy of our own instincts and emotions to make the moral judgements, and to stick by them, in order to have our child mentally and physically prepared for the big world ahead. Today, we are faced with a newer challenge, the introduction of the internet that has websites and social media. Parents are now faced with issues such as: cyber-bullying, child predators, identity theft, and a child’s privacy. According to Long (2007), she states that there are ten tips for healthier, safer children. These ten tips include: Getting early prenatal care, making sure your infant sleeps safely, keeping your child away from tobacco smoke, Use a car seat and make sure it is installed correctly, safely medicate your child, watch your child around water, Use smoke detectors; and have a family escape plan, know how to choose the right babysitter, make sure your child does not have access to firearms, and knowing the warning signs of suicide.
Even though children do not come with instructions at birth, society has progressed to promote parents in becoming better caretakers. The most important thing to being a good parent, is to never think that you can never improve in this area. Always keep an open mind to the ever changing world, and be enthusiastic to learn about the new programs and resources available for
