Over the last century the amount of injuries related to doing sports has skyrocketed. One common injury that we’ve seen a lot more of lately is a concussion. Records from 2009-2010 NCAA seasons show that 4.47 out of every 10,000 athletes get a concussion. That added up to over 10,000 concussion injuries in that year alone. That was just one injury. Imagine all other possible injuries and how many athletes are left treated and out for a season or more. Some injuries are delayed; you don’t realize you are hurt until some time after. Every sport has its own injuries, but which sport is hurting our athletes the most, and why? First on the list is football. Hockey is possibly the most padded up sport in the game right now and for good reason. Hockey is one of the most aggressive games out there with legal fistfights coming out of nowhere. It receives possibly the least support from the referee’s as a fighting penalty would only take you out a couple of minutes. Hockey actually has a higher concussion rate than football; 7.91 out of 10,000 athletes. The reason we hear and see more injuries about football and not hockey is the fact that not a lot of people play hockey. Although you see it more frequently you don’t see a lot of it due to the numbers. An over-practice injury is very common in sports, but mostly common in baseball. Some athletes participate in multiple sports year-round and that is great for the body. You train one part of the body then before it gets too bad the season is over and you can move on to the next sport. Some athletes have other plans to practice on one sport year round. It may be great, you are learning the game well, but you are overusing some parts of your body and those parts could just wear down to the point where it hurts or you can’t use them
