One in every four women are seuxally abused in the State of Colorado, equalling 1900 women daily. In fact, 31% of stalking cases result in the victim being sexually assaulted. Rape is one of the many crimes in Colorado that go unpunished due to only 10% of rapes being reported. Colorado House Bill 17-1035, which is Sex Assault and Stalking Victims Lease, must be passed immediately. This bill, which is sponsored by Representative Dominique Jackson from Arapahoe County and Senator John Cooke from Weld County is a bill “concerning and allowing certain victims to break their rental (housing) agreements under certain circumstances.” This bill should be passed so we can reduce domestic violence and domestic abuse.

Which is why we must allow HB17-1035 to be passed. Imagine getting assaulted and telling your landlord and your landlord saying you can't leave until the first year is done and over with. That’s terrifying and unfair to the tenants; they shouldn't have to feel unsafe in their own homes like Michelle Aswad along with the many others that get abused or stalked daily. Their homes should be the safest and most comfortable places in the world. Due to most perpetrators being repeat offenders, victims need to have the ability to leave without having to still pay the apartment rent until the contract is over. Since there is currently a law that permits domestic violence victims to vacate a lease when it is no longer safe for them, it is only fair we do the same for sexual assault and stalking. Like John Cooke said, “Far too often I have seen men & women become victims because they did not have this option to flee a dangerous situation.” It is time to become “Land of the Free” by adding more safety to people living on a lease, and adopt this house bill to make it a
