The Controversy about Carrying Guns on College Campus
One of the great debates in today’s society deals with our second amendment rights, the right to bear arms. One main aspect of this debate is whether guns kill people or whether people kill people. Carrying guns on college campuses is a big debate for families, professors, and college bound students.Texas is now one of the few states to allow concealed guns on campus (Should Guns Be Allowed on College Campuses). More than half of students nationwide are reported to be doing unwise decisions such as binge drinking and contuse drug use. Under these terrible choices students have a very bad sense of judgement (Speak Outs). It only takes one student to go and get drunk at a football game and then to be messing around with a gun to shoot themselves or students around them. It is also a proven fact that young adult’s brains are not fully developed in college so it is more likely for students to commit suicide due to the access of a gun (Speak Outs). Jill Engle, a mother of 5, says about the possibility of having guns on campus and what she thought about it is, “Many people, young or old, are not responsible enough to carry guns. Many do not utilize a gun on a regular basis which makes them unfamiliar or unsteady with the weapon. Add this to a crisis situation and imagine the outcome.” (Engle,
