Persuasive Essay On Gun Ownership

The issue regarding gun possession has been a controversial topic that has spurred outrage and confusion across the nation for years. The 2nd Amendment reads, “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Advocates of gun control argue that the right to bear arms solely applies to our military and police officers, as it is their job to defend us. Others believe however, that citizens should be able to carry guns on their own persons as a form of public defense. I believe that people should be able to yield guns on them because if we place our protection and defense in the hands of our police and military, there is always a possibility that something could corrupt them or they could retaliate. The government should make all gun laws universal so that there is less confusion between states. For example , some states allow you to carry guns as long as you conceal them while others allow them to be carried without concealing them, if the gun laws were universal we could have all states enforcing one law rather than separate states enforcing different laws. Another problem that I found was that the minimum age of possession was only 18 years old when the age to purchase alcohol is 21. If the government can't trust an 18 year old with alcohol then why is it ok for an 18 year old to yield a firearm? I believe the age should be changed to 21 so that the people who purchase a weapon can have a bit more time to mature.
