You are in a movie theater eating popcorn, all of a sudden BANG, thirty people killed, your favourite place now a crime scene. Guns are dangerous weapons that can take lives, and already have taken many, therefore we should be putting stricter regulations on purchasing a gun. The gun laws in the United States aren’t very strong, which makes it extremely easy to get your hands on one. Just across the border in Canada, the laws for purchasing a gun require certain paperwork that would not be needed in the United States. Being involved in a shooting, either directly or indirectly, has life-long, negative consequences. Making gun laws stricter and certain guns illegal will decrease the death rate dramatically. Canada’s gun laws may be stricter and have more steps to follow, but in Toronto it is far from safe. In order to purchase a gun in Canada you must pass a firearms safety training course. After passing the course, you can now apply for a possession and acquisition licence. There are three classes of firearms in Canada: non-restricted, restricted, and prohibited. In Canada there is no need for the non-restricted firearms. When you are in possession of a restricted firearm you must follow some rules such as, you can’t make any stops between your house and your shooting destination, and you must always carry your paperwork. The difference in laws have different effects on the number of shootings that occur. In America they have 56 000 gun homicides, in comparison to Canada, which only has 977. When looking at the numbers you may think that living in Canada is safe.
