Mars, as well as earth, is in the habitable for the solar system but it has yet to be colonized by humans. Mars has “remains of dried-up riverbed… carved by water” (Sparrow 98) showing that liquid water was once on the surface of Mars but has since disappeared. Mars has had many rovers land on its surface and explore its terrain but all of those rovers have not found anything more than “minerals that can form only in the presence of water” (Bell 31). With more funding, as NASA has gotten “$1.5 billion per year… priorities in our solar system.” (Dreier), the mystery of water on Mars could be solved and it could be colonized in order to save humans from the destruction of earth by the swelling of the sun. The habitable zone is an important variable in the search for another earth because it lets scientists know if the planet they are looking at could contain liquid water. But without to funding the search for the second earth and life in the universe would be buried.
