Clearly, there can be no one who honestly believes that people do not need the right to know if the food they are buying for themselves and their families has been genetically modified. There are many, however, who do not want the consumer to know what has been genetically modified.…

Although studies have shown that approximately 90% of Americans support labeling of GMO’s, companies still deny us the right to know what exactly we are consuming into our bodies(cite here). Throughout the world, there is an estimate of 64 countries that require labeling of GMO’s. There are countries like Japan, Australia, China, and Brazil that are strong supporters of our labeling GMO’s because those countries believe that their people should know what exactly they are putting into their bodies. If other countries support labeling, why can’t the US support it as well? Although there are a couple of states that are trying to pass bills to mandate labeling on GMO products, there is not enough enforcement to have the whole country cooperate with this dilemma.…

Consumers may make decisions to purchase and consume what is more appealing, tasteful, or inexpensive. In some cases, however consumers are more interested in what the food is actually made up of, where it comes from, and they also may have ethical concerns for how the animals are treated. Their concerns are even more specific, consumers want to know whether or not Genetically Modified Organisms…

In the United States, it is required by law that food made with genetically modified organisms, or more commonly referred to as GMOs, be labeled. Lawmakers may argue that consumers have the right to this information, but because of the general misconception that GMOs are dangerous and unhealthy, these labels can steer consumers away from buying certain products. In some scenarios, there are people arguing to end use of GMOs in general. Alder (2016), the author of “There is no Consumer Right to Know,” argues that labeling GMOs on food products could potentially be considered unconstitutional. He makes this argument due to the fact that there is a lack of scientific evidence that GMOs are harmful to humans in any way.…

Most GM produce have been developed to produce the introduction of resistance to plant diseases or of increased tolerance to herbicides. There is a dispute if the government should make labeling GM foods mandatory for companies. Those who are not in favor of mandatory labeling feel this way because mandatory labeling will falsely make the GMO foods appear to be unsafe, as supported by the Boston Globe, and there is no need for mandatory labeling because the FDA already checks our food. There are those who feel labeling GM foods should be mandatory because of the customers’ right to know what is in their food, as shown through an ABC poll, and mandatory labeling will lead to less production of GMOs, as proven by Dr. Byrne. While there are ways to support both sides, it is clear that labeling GM foods should be mandatory for food companies because of ethical purposes, supported by Paul Ramsey, scientific benefits, shown through Andrew Starbird, and GM food’s possibility to cause allergies, illustrated through Jon Entine’s investigation of an article in Elle magazine written by Caitlin Shetterly.…
