GMOs, also known as genetically modified organisms, is for the most part a plant that has been altered using biotechnology to carry genes that express a desired trait. (“What are GMOs?”) In this case, genetically modified foods are biologically altered meaning scientists transfer a desire gene from a plant, animal, or organism and into another. (Kannall) This process has been used for food production. There have been many controversies about genetically modified crops and whether people are just better off eating from conventional crops. There has been research justifying that genetically modified food are okay to eat but also research suggesting they’re not okay. Despite the potential for health risks and environmental damage, genetically modified foods should continue to be due to the fact that they are safe, have more health benefits than risks, and are in reality environmental friendly.

According to the FDA policy, in such cases when foods have been genetically modified to improve the nutritional content must be labeled to show the nutritional difference between the food that hasn't been modified. Before any GMO can come to stores, its heavily testing to ensure that the content of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is not altered during the final process. If altered, the GMO is considered unsafe. (“What Effect do GMOs have on Human Health?”) All of nations that are involved with GM food production must follow rules and regulations for the production and sale of GM foods and beverages. In the United States, three different federal agencies, EPA, USDA, and FDA have taken the responsibility to assure that GM foods are safe to consume.
