Gay Gene Persuasive Essay

Improved Essays
“Being gay is a choice” is a phrase that is often used by right-wing conservatives, but what if it isn’t so. Is it possible that the “gay gene” that causes humans to have same sex attraction exists in conjunction with pheromones? It is possible for there to be some genetic factor with pheromones that causes homosexuality at a minor scale compared to heterosexuality. Pheromones in humans have long been a mysterious concept with little evidence to prove, although it is present in other animals of the animal kingdom. Discovering if the “gay gene” actually exist in conjunction with pheromones would be fundamental to society because it would help ease discrimination on those of the LGBT community by providing scientific proof that being gay is not a choice. …show more content…
The “gay gene” is a gene that codes for homosexual preference. Dean Hamer, scientist emeritus at the National Institutes of Health, published a study in 1993 hypothesizing that a region of the X chromosome might play a role in a man’s sexuality, the Xq28 gene. With this information he began an experiment 20 years ago studying 38 homosexual brothers and that’s when he confirmed the existence of the Xq28 gene. This makes me beg the question if he ran a control group considered “straight” people. Since Hamer wasn’t funded properly, he had a small test group which loses credibility of his findings. However Hamer is performing a replication of this experiment currently with a study group of 400 pair of homosexual brothers. It’s been hypothesized that the “gay gene” in men is an X-linked gene because it would make sense why a group that has fewer offspring still has a trait that is apparent, homosexuality, in society. It’s believed that this trait increases a female’s fertility (Survick 2014). Discovering if the “gay gene” has some advantage to human population, such as increasing a female’s fertility, makes it more plausible that this gene

The Brain Studies of Simon LeVay Researchers have studied that sexual preferences and behavior of homosexuals may be shown by the structure of the brain—particularly if the brains of homosexual men, for example, can be dictated to resemble those of heterosexual women more than they resemble those of heterosexual men. One highly publicized study that purported to demonstrate this was conducted in 1991 by former Salk Institute researcher Simon LeVay. LeVay studied the brains of cadavers or dead people, including 18 men known to be homosexual and one known to be bisexual. He compared them with the brains of another 16 men and six women whom he presumed to have been heterosexual.…

I thought this test was a lot different than the other ones; it made me feel like the researchers were almost setting us up to come out as biased against Gay people. Associating negative words with homosexuality is a way of skewing the results, in my opinion. I am proud of the results I got because I do not know very many gay or lesbian people and I never really grew up having any friends come out. I can count the number of gay people I personally know on one hand. I learned from this that if any of my friends do come out to me that I should ideally be very accepting and treat them the same as I treat my straight friends.…

However there are several reasons why this argument does not logically hold up. The first being that even children raised by opposing-sex couples identify as gay. Another loophole of this argument is that many gay individuals donate in order to help individuals get artificially inseminated yet the children born from these situations often identify as straight. Clearly there is no genetic link that leads to an individual finding their sexual orientation. It’s also important to note that it is unreasonable to think that children raised by same sex couples are not definitively going to end up psychologically damaged simply because of having this kind of upbringing.…

Pillard and Illinois Family Institute have conservative views of homosexuality, which indicates that Laramie is not the only place that has homophobes, but rather the whole nation. Homosexuality is not caused by only genetics or environmental reasons, but rather by a combination of reasons. According to Charles Lopresto, “human sexual behavior is . . . determined by ancient genes, brain function, biological processes, and cognitive influences such as social and cultural attitudes” (Lopresto 42).…

Trudeau explained that “what’s done in private between adults doesn’t concern the criminal code” (CBC News, 2012). I agree with this statement, the only people that should be concerned about what you are doing in your sexual life is those that are engaging in it with you.…

Less obviously, the idea that sexuality is more a product of biology is problematic because there could still be intervention using misguided medicine (Sedgwick 43). In Ghose article it is also stated that, “other research has found that being gay or lesbian tends to run in families.” People who have homosexual relationships throughout their family are more than likely to become homosexual. They see these relationships and believe it is okay to do the same. Not necessarily because they want to but, because they were never taught the difference between right and wrong. With that being said some also might come to the conclusion that being gay or lesbian is more of something genetic.…
