My name is Jacqueline Everly and I am currently a junior attending Lemoore High School in Lemoore, California, located in the central valley near Fresno. Throughout this year in my English class, we have been learning about the rights Americans have as citizens. While reading documents such as Stride Towards Freedom and the Declaration of Independence, I have learned what it takes to be a true American. A few months ago we started learning about freedom of speech and what it means when it is taken away. The First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”(“Legal Information”). When you passed Executive Order 9066, people’s loathe towards Japanese people got stronger. This is an order you passed which forced everyone who is of a Japanese descent or a citizen is placed into internment camps. While rounding up all the Japanese people, the racial slur “Japs” was used causing many people to take offense. For example in the book the author stated “C’mon Japs, move it. Move it!”(Wakatsuki 79). While people may have been offended by this word, it was used repeatedly during this time period. People understand not to use this word as it is a form of racism. This can give you and America a bad reputation, but this is a significant part of our history. This story is being told from a personal point of view which you can not find very often. Not only does this go against everything America stands for but it also does not represent our country very well. As the president people look up to you and your morals are not in the right place. People follow and listen to what you say and this can only lead to other forms of
