Persuasive Essay On Free Public Education

Scott Turow once said, “Widespread public access to knowledge, like public education, is one of the pillars of our democracy, a guarantee that we can maintain a well-informed citizenry” (Turow, 2011). Free public education is considered to be the most imperative solution for a child to become a responsible member of society. Children are to gain a sense of knowledge throughout their childhood, and public schools are in desperate need of funding to provide the education they need. On the other hand, not all children were born within a wealthy family, so the low-income families with young children are not financially stable to pay for tuition. As news stations and other credible sources have shown, the budgets proposed for the school districts aren’t going as planned. The public school systems are finding money shortages, and are preparing to close multiple schools in the future. Why are schools closing and why isn’t there any funding for them? For some school districts, it’s because enrollment has rapidly decreased, lower testing scores, and graduation rates. In addition, some school districts base their budgets on property taxes in their location. But, simply raising the property taxes in these areas wouldn’t solve this stressful puzzle. The wealthy neighbors in the area aren’t willing to pay the extra dollar and the poor don’t have the extra dollar to pay. Raising the taxes won’t unravel the school’s debt, but will allow the budget to increase to fund them. No matter what is done, other areas would be struggling to afford it.
