Persuasive Essay On Filibusters

Improved Essays
A filibuster is where an effort of minority of lawmakers, delay or block the Senate from voting on a bill or a confirmation. The minority can indefinitely obstruct something that has majority support, to make use of the chamber’s rules for full debate on an issue, from the Senate Historical Office, the term traces back to a Dutch word meaning “pirate.” Of how the Filibuster works, The Senate generally operates by unanimous consent. If any senators refuse to consent to holding an up-or-down vote on Judge Grouch's nomination, the Senate has to decide whether to overrule them. It would do so by holding a “cloture” vote on whether to end debate and proceed to a final vote. It takes 60 votes to invoke cloture, so 41 senators can indefinitely block

On January 7 Pickering was re-nominated due to the fact that the Republicans gained control of the Senate. On October 2, 2003 Pickering went before the Judiciary Committee and the vote was 10-9, sending him to the Senate. The Democrats were still not going to allow him to be accepted, so they threatened a filibuster. The first time I had ever seen a filibuster was Rand Paul’s filibuster on the Patriot Act. A filibuster is when a member of the Senate uses prolonged speech to obstruct progress in a legislative assembly. During the filibuster of the Patriot Act earlier this year Rand Paul stood on the Senate floor for 12 hours or more and talked without eating, using the bathroom, or even sitting down. Now this is true passion for a topic. A lot of people though are against the filibuster because it halts a lot of progress on many different items, and some even blame the filibuster for the reason Congress is having some many issues at the moment.…

Congress voted to overturn both vetoes. Under the Constitution, a vetoed bill becomes law if it wins the votes of two thirds of each house. Both bills received enough votes to become laws. Congress also drew up the Fourteenth Amendment to the constitution, seeking to make sure that the Supreme Court did not strike down the Civil Rights Act. Republicans remembered the Court’s…

This grants the President the power to veto any legislation, any bill that is to be voted on has to be sent to the President for review (UShistory.org). Though Congress has ways to go around the President to get bill passed to turn into laws (UShistory.org). If the bill were to sit on the President’s desk for more than ten days without him signing or vetoing then the bill becomes a law (UShistory.org). I remember when Donald Trump first announced his political run for office. He built his campaign on the slogan: We’re going to Make America Great Again, “reinforced” by his bold claim of “building a wall”. When Trump got down into the weeds with Megyn Kelly during the first Fox News Republican debate, I sensed Donald Trump was a proud and arrogant man. I went on my own campaign against him; making phone calls, writing emails, calling news agencies and talk shows, posting madly to Facebook — whatever I could do to try to stop a really bad person from wrecking the Republican Party and damaging the nation. NeverTrump was my obsession, but it was, at that time, merely political for me.…

The winner of the 2016 Presidential election was a Republican (Donald Trump), and the majority of the current House of Representatives is also Republican. The Republicans hope to solve the current problems that America is facing today in what they believe in and how they should be solved.…

Guns are used all around the world, but here in the United States, we need to keep our gun usage limited with gun laws. Gun laws are put into action to make sure firearms are used responsibly; however, people will always find a way to break these laws no matter how many are made. Our Second Amendment, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”, gives U.S. citizens the right to own a weapon and use it for the right reasons. Gun laws will not reduce the amount of gun deaths in the U.S. because gun laws do not determine crime; gun ownership determines crime numbers. There were 460,000 gun deaths in the U.S. between 1999-2013 and this was the 12th leading cause of death.…

If they could be regulated the occurrence of stalemates would most likely be reduced and subsequently the effectiveness of Congress would rise. Effectiveness is expected of a government and when it isn’t delivered it can damage the government 's ability to function. “…political instability damaged the ability of Russia to build…” (Ruffley 192). Filibustering and gerrymandering only festers the problem of ineffectiveness. Regulating these two matters would more than likely help speed up our snail’s pace and balance the majority and minority parties in favor of the citizens’ opinion.…
