Fight for Freedom “Our nation was founded on a bedrock principle that we are all created equal” (Korte). This was said by Obama after the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot ban same-sex marriage. This statement proves that America was built based on a constitution that characterized everybody as equal with no man better than another. This rejects discrimination against any person based on their religion, race, or other things such as sexuality. The United States has fought to protect the rights of those who have been discriminated against, and same-sex couples have had their fight for freedom, too. Although some say that marriage is between a male and female, homosexual couples should be allowed the right to marry; the recent law prohibiting states from banning same-sex marriage protects homosexuals’ rights to equality, marriage, and free expression.
Allowing same-sex couples to marry protects their constitutional rights to equality. Whether people agree with relationships between two males or two females, homosexuals are protected by the constitution to have the same rights as heterosexuals. The constitution itself protects marriage rights by protecting citizens from unfair judgements. The Constitution of the United States says, “Nor [shall any State] deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws” (amend. 14, sec. 1). This proves that the government is not allowed to ban same-sex marriage because denies homosexuals the right of protection of the law. This protection ensures that every citizen has the right to choose who they marry. “Anyone who wants to get married has a constitutional right to do so” (Roberts 16). This was said by Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts during Obergefell vs Hodges case. It proves that marriage is a right, and America has protections that guarantee marriage
