Opponents say taxing sugary drinks has hardly any effect on slowing down health problems such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension. weight gain, but according to studies, consumers switch to alternatives such as bottled water and tea. According to Nicholas D. Kristof, a columnist for the New York Times states that, taxing sugary drinks is a way to combat obesity. The purpose of the tax is to make people healthier. The 1983 increase in the federal tax on cigarettes saved 40,000 lives per year. The same is expected with the taxing of sugary drinks. Its has been found that the most promising cure for lung cancer did not emerge from the medical research lab but from money grubbing politicians. This tax would shift consumer to healthy drinks or water which will help reduce the obesity rates. Sugary drinks are the major contributor to obesity. Liquid calories do not register with the body so according to studies, people consume more. One new study estimates that 24 million Americans now have diabetes so taxing these drinks will help reduce the death.(Kristof ) Researchers and community organization had generate evidence that taxing sugary drinks will reduce chronic disease.
