As society progresses and technology advances, there are many ways to aid weight loss. There are weight loss surgeries that freeze fat and ones that suck fat but one cheaper and less invasive way to lose weight is extreme dieting. With the pressure increasing to be skinny and have a perfect body, people take extreme measures to get their dream body as fast as possible. The word “diet” seems to be associated with quick weight loss and results that last. However, when following a fad diet, this may not be the case. On this type of diet, a person may lose mainly water weight which is usually easily gained back. This means once she completes the diet and goes back to her normal eating habits full of nutrition and fat, these pounds are highly likely to be gained back within a short time frame. “Most fad diets promote a ‘quick fix’ and don’t teach healthy eating plans. They tend to be restrictive, boring, and difficult to follow over the long term. Once the weight is lost, a dieter often returns to old eating patterns and habits, causing him or her to regain weight” (Fad Diets). According to the author of the article titled “23 Exceptional Fad Diet Statistics,” research has shown that young girls who diet at severe levels are 18 times more likely to develop an eating disorder within six months. Instead of promoting a healthy and good weight loss feeling, fad diets may cause symptoms of dizziness and drowsiness. “Many fad diets require you to restrict carbohydrates. Because of their lack of nutrition, these diets can lead to muscle deterioration. During a steady weight loss plan, every pound lost is mostly fat and only a small amount of water and muscle tissue. When a person goes on a low calorie fad diet, her body is not getting enough energy from food calories so instead it breaks down muscle protein to make up for the lack of energy. “Research presented at the 2014 European Congress on Obesity shows that when you lost weight fast, you lose about three times more muscle than you would if you took things slowly” (Fetters). Fad diets can damage your heart and decrease its ability to pump blood to the body properly. Just as muscle loss can happen, the same process can happen to the heart. The body uses muscle tissue and protein as energy since it is not getting enough energy from food. If this goes on for too long, the heart can begin to lose its strength and slowly form irregular beats which can lead to murmurs or even heart attacks. “Because your body isn’t getting energy from food, [the heart] converts body tissue into glucose for energy. If the heart loses too much muscle, it can’t pump properly, leading to irregular heartbeat, which can result in a heart attack” (Mirror). Threats to heart health should not be taken lightly. If damage is caused to the heart it may not be reversible and may lead to heart
