Do you remember childhood life in elementary school? Did you enjoy it? Do you miss that time? If the answer is yes, you should feel pity for the children nowadays. As the specialist say, “the extra month of instruction provides additional learning opportunities which contribute to Brooks ' success”(Tawasha, par. 2). They think more time in school is good for the kids. There’s already 2.5% elementary school in USA being change to year-round school(Tawasha, par. 1). Can you ever imagine no summer vacation? I disagree with extended school time, I really don’t. Is that because I think it is useless? No! If the school time got extended, then the out of school time will be decrease. There is a program called youth out-of-school time(OST) in USA. It can provide developmental benefits for participating youth, they can make sure child use the out of school time.(Wimer, Simpkins, Dearing, Bouffard, Caronongan, Weiss, par. 1) They made a research about the relationship between child and family, school, neighbor. “Child and family characteristics were most useful in predicting participation such that children least likely to participate were those characterized by high levels of developmental (e.g., low achievement, behavior problems, poor health) and family (e.g., parent psychological distress and low emotional support) problems. These relations, however, emerged only during middle school and high school. For certain types of activities, namely athletics and lessons, problems measured across various contexts were more strongly associated with OST participation for higher-income families than for lower-income families”(Wimer, etal, par.1). According to that research, it says children growth is actually have relationship with families. Children needs family more than they need teacher. We get psychological distress and low emotional support from parents. In the research, the children who low achievement, behavior problems or poor health might have problem with families. These findings point to the importance of considering multiple developmental domains and developmental periods in understanding predictors of youth OST participation. (Wimer, etal, par. 1).
