Many people will recognize the Electoral College from previous presidential elections, however studies show only 57% of people know what it is. The Electoral College is a system that is used in electing the president. People cast their votes in their state and then all the votes are counted. Officials then look at the percentage of voters for each candidate and the candidate with the larger percent gets that state. Each state has a panel of electors, the amount they have depending on population. Each state has at least three electors. The electors in each state vote on what the population wants. Finally, the candidate with the most electoral votes becomes president. This process may sound good, however what happens to the votes of the people who voted for the losing candidate in their state?

They have voted Republican since the late 19th century. All the people who voted Democratic in Texas will never be heard as long as the majority of Texas votes Republican. Texas is not the only state like this. In every state there are people who vote differently than the general population and aren’t heard. If the Electoral College continues, every presidential election voters votes won’t matter, because of this many people don’t even vote. Why should they vote if they feel like their votes never count? In a total of five elections, presidential candidates have won the Electoral College and not the popular vote. The most recent time this happened was in the most recent election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Donald Trump became president winning more than 270 of the Electoral Votes. The catch is that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by about 2.9 million votes. That is almost three million votes that weren’t counted! And to think that this has happened five times!
