A democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people, and the United States claims to have the freest and most democratic in the world. In fact, many consider the American democracy to be a shining beacon of freedom, more so than any other nation on earth. Yet, upon closer examination of the U.S. presidential election process, this claim begins to deteriorate. Due to the founding fathers’ distrust in the ability of average voters to choose a president, they created the Electoral College: a system through which each state is given a number of electors based on its number of members in Congress. State legislatures choose a set of electors who later convene to cast votes for president.…

The electoral college is a voting system where a group of people from each state cast their votes for the whole state based on popular majority.…

In addition, the counting of votes is not done at the national level but State by State. The winner of the popular vote in each State takes all the electoral votes of that State. The winner of the elections is the one who sums up the majority of electoral votes.…

Civics Persuasive Essay Fresh out of the presidential election of 2000, many people were convinced that the electoral college had to go. In the Gore vs Bush election, Bush had come out the winner, although only in the electoral college. Surprisingly, in a rare turn of events, Gore exceeded Bush in popular votes, and it was only through a long scuffle over the state of Florida that Bush finally won the presidency. For a great portion of the population, approximately 62% according to an article on Gallup by Lydia Saad, it was time to amend the constitution and replace the electoral voting system with strictly popular vote as the means of attaining the presidency. I, on the other hand, after investigating the issue years later, have decided otherwise, that it is best to hold onto the institution of the electoral college when electing a president.…
