Drunk Driving Driving while intoxicated is a danger to yourself, and everyone else on the road. Everyday people are getting hurt or killed by a drunk driver, and there should be something to help prevent this. Having stricter laws would discourage drivers from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Drunk driving is a serious problem, and one thing that can help decrease the damage it does is having stricter laws. The danger of having a drunk driver on the road is somethings that no one should have to face. As reported by the U.S Department of Health and Human services in 2014 there were 9,967 people killed by a drunk driver. Of those people 116 children were killed from being in the car with a drunk driver. Those facts show how dangerous an impaired driver can be, even if they have only had two drinks they have trouble tracking objects and they lose the ability to multitask. As stated in the article by Matthew Chambers, Mindy Liu, and Chip Moore there are an estimated four million U.S. adults arrested for drunk driving in 2010. That number is unacceptable high, what if all four million were to cause a fatal crash. If there were harsher punishments in place I believe that number would be much smaller. In the Iowa DUI and DWI laws and enforcements it says that getting pulled over the first time results in losing your license for one hundred and eighty days as well as being subjected to criminal penalties and fines. For a second offense you lose your license of ra year and can face criminal penalties and fines if convicted. These laws were not strict enough to discourage drunk drivers.
