Americans need to be educated regarding the dangers of opioid painkiller addiction and its transition into heroin addiction. While working on the essay portion of this subject, I thought extensively about possible mediums and strategies to raise awareness on this issue. A problem of this magnitude requires more than one medium to get the message to the appropriate audience. I would utilize television, radio, print ads and social media to reach the target audience. Due to the severity of this epidemic, the targeted audience is high school age children. The message will be widely distributed in a two-part campaign.

Online advertisements would feature information regarding the direct pathway from prescription pain medications to heroin. They would feature images of healthy youthful people that were addicted to pain medications and like the billboards, show the transition to heroin addict. Additionally I would create a Facebook page dedicated to addiction. This page would include videos from people who have been affected by addiction. The videos would consist of stories from former users, victims of drug related crimes and family of addicts who have died and the effect addiction had them and their families. The final medium for this phase is television commercials. The commercials, like the other mediums would link the gateway to heroin that is created through prescription pain medications. They would feature young, healthy people that no one would associate with an addict. The commercial would follow one of these children as they transitioned into heroin. In this commercial, the addict would steal money and jewelry from his parents for drugs. It would show the deterioration of his relationships due to his addiction and finally the devastation to his family after he passed away from an overdose.
