Texting while driving has become a major issue in today’s society. Teens, even adults, have an addiction to their phone and can not put it down. Even though there has been a multitude of deaths due to texting and driving, it is evident that the laws against this are not effective at all. The laws are ineffective because it is very difficult for police to catch a person texting while driving, many drivers will still text even though it is highly prohibited, they will try to hide that they are texting, and drivers can be distracted by other applications on their smart phones. Along with not being able to determine if someone is texting and driving, the person could say that they were using their map even though they were texting. There is no real way for a law enforcement officer to see if the person was actually texting. Barbara Graff, a councilwoman of Odessa, Texas has previously talk to officers about this situation. Even the officers asked Ms. Graff how they are supposed to catch this violation. Ms. Graff has also stated that “education on the dangers of distracted driving would be more effective in Odessa than a ban” (Swartsell). She is saying that if people actually understand why texting while driving is dangerous, then that will be more beneficial than having a law and finning every one who texts while driving. It would be a better motivation to stop texting and driving if drivers understood the risk and that they could potentially kill someone, they would most likely not text and drive as often (Swartsell). A great example of this would be officer George Tyson’s situation. Tyson is an officer in Pooler, Georgia and attempted to catch drivers texting.
