“We never knew the worth of clean water, until it was all contaminated.”
Water shortage is an expanding issue confronting a huge number of people on our Earth, including here in Australia. There have been numerous suggestions tested to help solve this water emergency. One of these ideas is desalination of water. There are many disadvantages to using this method to help solve this water crisis. Some of these include an enormous environmental impact, producing contaminated water, extremely costly and a massive amount of energy is required. It is for these reasons alone that desalination of water should definitely not to be used or continued to be used to help solve this water crisis.
Desalination is the long process of removing salt from seawater. Where the extracted salt is placed can have an enormous environmental impact on the wildlife, rivers, creeks, plants etc. That salt alone can kill the wildlife, animals and vegetation if it comes in contact with them. The desalination process could start producing chemicals into our water supply, that we drink out of. Desalination is having a massive environmental impact in a bad way and could start producing chemicals in our water supply. …show more content…
It takes two-kilowatt hours of power to construct one cubic meter of clean, pure water from a desalination plant. That would cost just under two dollars. One average person uses about 80 - 100 gallons of water per day, can you just imagine how much money this would cost. Since 2005 over $12 billion has been invested into six major desalination plants in Perth, Sydney, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Melbourne. Way too much money is being invested and some of the regions that are desalinating water are complaining that they can not afford to keep paying this sort of money to desalinate
