Although I believe that schools should get involved when cyberbullying occurs, there are also many reasons why schools should not get involved when this occurs. Many people think when schools get involved they are violating students first amendment right of freedom of speech, meaning any person has a right to his or her opinion and may say whatever they are thinking online. For example, people who are against school punishment for cyberbullying think students have the right to say whatever they want on social media even if it offends someone and hurts someone else. It could be positive or negative and they won’t get in to trouble even if it is online. They have the right to do so. According to “Schools should not interfere with student speech off campus” the speech needs to substantially interfere with the discipline at school (1). Sometimes it is difficult to determine if cyberbullying is interfering at school. Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online (“cyberbullying” 1). This is almost half of teens which is startling. About 25% have been bullied more than one time which shows that cyberbullying is not a one-time thing. One out of ten students will tell a trusted adult that the cyberbullying is happening. When students can’t tell trusted adults, they feel scared and don’t know what to do. Many kids may end up committing suicide (cyberbullyingfacts” 2-4). For example, bullying victims are two to nine times more likely to consider committing suicide than anyone else for whatever reason (“cyberbullyingfacts” 4). In the Phoebe Prince case she committed suicide because she was getting tired of getting cyberbullied constantly. The students at South Hadley School in Massachusetts were constantly bullying Prince, they were relentless with their verbal assaults, and gender specific verbal torture which is sexual harassment. As a federal law forbids gender discrimination this lead her to commit suicide, now lawmakers are working to explain why a law hasn’t been passed for anti- bullying and are working to make this a law (federal law requires schools to protect children from cyberbullying).Therefore, when kids get cyberbullied they feel so bad about themselves that they feel the need to commit suicide, so schools need to step up and help put an
