Concussions, athletes in nearly every sport has most likely received one. Football, hockey players, and boxers usually can recognize a mild concussion by what they call “Seeing lights,” or “Hearing bells.” Even though there are estimated nearly 250,000 concussions that occur each year in football, concussions also happen frequently in basketball, gymnastics, and even baseball. So it is important to understand what a concussion is and how we can determine the severity of a concussion. Concussions are one of the worst bodily injuries you can sustain. They make you feel woozy, they make you want to lie down in a dark and quiet room and sleep for a few days. You start to forget very simple things. Some people believe that especially in the NFL, more extreme measures need to be taken to prevent head injuries. Some believe that the players should have to sign wavers saying that the NFL will not be responsible for any injury that may happen to them during the course of the game. The NFL has already tried this.

The NFL is now trying to reduce the number of concussions by calling penalties in the case of helmet-to-helmet hits, resulting in a fifteen-yard penalty. This still isn’t enough. Defensive players, especially safeties and linebackers, are running head first into whoever they are trying to tackle, using the top of their helmet as a “weapon”. They are still not doing enough for the safety of the players and the safety of the game because there are still vast amounts of players that still try their best to get away with these “dirty” hits.

Because of lawsuits filed against the NFL recently by former players, the league is now suspending and fining players who deliver constant blows to the head. After a ridiculous amount of lawsuits, the NFL is now suspending and fining players indefinitely if they continue to violate the helmet to helmet rules put in
