When being assigned a research essay for chemistry, my mind instantly went blank. I had no idea what to write about. I changed my idea at least five times before actually deciding to write about caffeine. I thought about writing about business, music, disease, energy drinks, dreams, …show more content…
It can give athletes just the boost they need to help them win. It can increase their alertness, muscle power, reaction time, endurance, and even decrease muscle fatigue. Lab experiments with mice have been able to demonstrate that this theory is true. Dan Peterson writes, “A high dose of caffeine produced a boost in muscle power in laboratory mice, according to a study led by Rob James, a researcher in biomolecular and sports science at Coventry University in England” (1). The caffeine in the mice blood gave them an increase in power, and the research showed that it will have the same effect on humans. Research has showed that it can help increase endurance for distance running, soccer, and tennis games. Caffeine helps enhance athletic performance because it changes the levels of neurotransmitters in your brain. This means that the chemicals in your brain that are supposed to feel tired are blocked, giving off a high level of ongoing energy: adrenaline. The body still needs sleep, the caffeine just delays it. Glycogen is the principal fuel for muscles and exhaustion occurs when it is depleted. When caffeine mobilizes, fat stores. It begins encouraging working muscles to use fat as fuel. The depletion of muscle glycogen delays and therefore gives the athletes a prolongation of exercise. Next time I go on a run, I am going to have some …show more content…
The positives outweighs the negatives for me. Caffeine, specifically coffee and tea are important pastimes in our society. Friends meet for coffee and lots of countries have afternoon tea. There is a Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks on almost every street in Natick. I believe that caffeine deeply shapes our society and most people do not realize that. I never realized that caffeine affects the chemicals in my brain and without this project I would never have researched this. Caffeine has the ability to improve athletic performance, keep our minds sharp, and unfortunately it can be a gateway drug. Chemistry is everywhere and I never think I would have been able to realize it without this
