The U.S. spends $40 billion on coffee a year. Americans drink an average of 3.1 cups of coffee a day. It is safe to say, Americans drink a lot of coffee. The most important ingredient in coffee is the caffeine. Caffeine has the ability to do great and bad things to a person’s body and it relates to biochemistry. Caffeine’s main forms are coffee, tea, and cocoa. Caffeine enhances athletic performance, improves memory, and it can be potentially be a gateway drug.

It is the world’s most commonly abused brain stimulant (Wenk 1). Coffee consumption needs to be closely payed attention to. Murray Carpenter says, “ ‘A tablespoon — about 10 grams — will kill you,’ he says, recounting the unfortunate story of a college student who went into a seizure and died after chasing down spoonfuls of caffeine with an energy drink” (NPR). Caffeine contains the power to harm people physically and mentally. It gave the college student a seizure and it can make people feel mentally addicted to it. Besides caffeine being prominent in coffee, soft drinks such as Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew and many more are caffeine based. Soda can contain as much caffeine as 16 ounces of regular strong coffee. The science behind it is in an adult brain it enhances the activity of dopamine in the brain and produces an euphoria that encourages the brain to crave more coffee. In adolescent brain, it produces a more dramatic increase in motor activity. A long-term caffeine consumption during adolescence leads to a greater sensitivity towards drugs. The positives outweighs the negatives for me. Caffeine, specifically coffee and tea are important pastimes in our society. Friends meet for coffee and lots of countries have afternoon tea. There is a Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks on almost every street in Natick. I believe that caffeine deeply shapes our society and most people do not realize that. I never realized that caffeine affects the chemicals in my brain and without this project I would never have researched this. Caffeine has the ability to improve athletic performance, keep our minds sharp, and unfortunately it can be a gateway drug. Chemistry is everywhere and I never think I would have been able to realize it without this
